"A City To Love" - Ramon Ramirez

Solo Exhibition at Wallspace

Artist Reception Saturday 4th 6-9pm. October 4th - 27th

Wallspace 607 North La Brea, Los Angeles CA 90036

Wallspace is pleased to present the solo exhibition "A City To Love," of process drawings and paintings by Ramon Ramirez, with an artist reception October 4th at Wallspace.

Ramirez was born and raised in Los Angeles, and the city has served as his muse from the onset, one he continuously investigates and explores. That sense of exploration comes through in vivid, strong lines that transmit the city’s vibrancy.

"I’ve been painting the LA skyline for some time now and it’s always taken from the “back view,” or the east side looking west. Some people see progress, some people see industry, some people see tyranny, you name it. However, the painting requires that you bring your experiences and values to the table," Ramirez told Jose L.S. Gamez in an interview for the UCLA Chicano Studies Research center last year.

Ramirez is one of the featured artists in the book "Contemporary Chicana/Chicano Artists," and his work has been shown at galleries throughout the country and institutions including the Fowler Museum at UCLA. He received his B.A., M.A. + M.Arch. degrees from the University of California at Berkeley and teaches freshman drawing at the university level.

As a trained architect, drawing is an integral component of Ramirez’s artistic process and this is his first exhibit with charcoal drawings alongside his final oil paintings. His process is to perform reconnaissance, driving to locations to take photos which then become sketches of the landscape he plans to paint. Only then does he move from charcoal to oil.

“I admire Ramon’s work very much and for many reasons, including the fact that he manages to create so much clarity with the use of such a non-forgiving medium - oilstick and oil paints,” said Valda Lake, owner of Wallspace.

Ramirez will attend the October 4th reception but is available for interviews previous to the event. Please RSVP to art@wallspacela.com
