"Black and Light"

Solo Exhibition
Philip Vaughan

January 23rd - February 13th, 2016

Wallspace is proud to present “Black and Light," a solo show by artist Philip Vaughan.

Vaughan has had a prolific career: from oversized public neon works shown on the Southbank in London in 1972, to a kinetics sculpture show at Hayward Gallery in London to his current charcoal and pastel works on paper, in the United States. Vaughan has also taken part in shows at the Royal Academy of Arts, the Serpentine Gallery, and the Walker Gallery in Liverpool.

Brought up by English parents in Sainte Addresse, Le Havre, France, he was sent to English boarding school at the age of 9. There he had the good fortune to meet Gordon Taylor, his first mentor at Brighton College who started him on a lifelong love of architecture, painting and sculpture.
His new work, "Black and Light" shows the continuing dialogue between the different mediums that influence him, and the nuances that continue to evolve over time.

“The work I do often derives its essence from a study of “hidden” geometry. Often this is hidden to the point that even I barely sense the connection,” Vaughan writes. “A significant portion of that natural ordering is dynamic. It reveals itself in the geometry of fluid motion for example the growth pattern of a plant from seed to full-grown. Hence my work has often involved motion and movement within the work itself. To me the static and the motion are reflections of each other. All this is also inextricably tied up in the way that we perceive the world around us and the action of nature, this illusion that we call color and vision.”

Wallspace is a dynamic gallery on La Brea that shows art in a non-conventional setting. Hung salon style on 14' high walls, the gallery aims to create a floor-to-ceiling visceral experience. We are excited about finding new visions and contributing to the launch of careers whilst also representing more established Los Angeles based artists. We regularly present solo shows and have a permanent rotating collection of art on view.
